Padiham Pound Pledge launched today

Community spirit remains as strong as ever in Padiham as groups and individuals across the town continue to rally round following the Boxing Day floods.

Padiham mum Heather Beardsworth is urging shoppers to pledge their pounds to help flood-hit traders get back on their feet.

She has started a “Padiham Pound Pledge” with a Facebook page, attracting 200 supporters within four hours.

It will be officially launched outside Padiham Town Hall at 9am today.

Heather went into action after seeing the damage caused at Padiham Medical Centre, one of the town centre properties hit when the Calder burst its banks.

Meanwhile, Lancashire County Coun. for Padiham Marcus Johnstone is set to meet with the Environment Agency’s Area Manager for Lancashire and Cumbria Keith Ashcroft.

County Coun. Johnstone said: “We will be looking at areas of the town which were flooded on Boxing Day and I’m keen that he should know that it wasn’t just the River Calder which flooded.

“Properties adjoining GreenBrook were also badly affected. The plan is to show him the River Calder, behind Padiham Town Hall, Lune Street, Green Brook, Thompson Street, Shakespeare Street, Melbourne Street, Sweet Clough (which runs into Green Brook) and Printers Fold.

“Padiham town centre was flooded from two sides and the water came from both Lune Street and from behind the town hall with the car park wall holding water from both directions at one stage.”
