Brendan Morris (32), of Dryden Street, is helping to co-ordinate the effort and said he had been overwhelmed by the community spirit shown so far.

“The response has been incredible. We’ve been receiving everything. We’ve had sofas, televisions, clothes, toys and it keeps on coming in. The general public have just been fantastic.

“We have now got plenty of clothes but we’re still in need of some of the bigger items, like sofas. It all really helps.”

Brendan, who has donated two of his own sofas, requires an operation on his feet and so while he has not been able to help with some of the heavy lifting he has been driving volunteers around.

This includes Matthew Robert who since Boxing Day has been walking from Colne to Padiham just to offer his services.

“He’s been incredible,” said Brendan. “When I heard he was doing this I offered to pick him up and bring him over. He’s been helping out any way he can. There are so many people and businesses coming together. A lot of the donations have been collected at Santander in town so myself, Matthew, a lad called Daryl Graham and Jenna Daley, from Santander, have been going door to door with the items, seeing what people need.

“Storage First in Liverpool Road have kindly let us use two of their units so we’re storing items there now and Padiham Man and a Van have been helping us move stuff whilst not charging for fuel. Chris Tennant has been a massive help and I’d also like to say thank you to Karen Ingham who has been helping to man the Facebook page and co-ordinate the collections.

“The community spirit shown has just been remarkable.”

Anybody wishing to make donation can contact Brendan on [email protected] or through the ‘Padiham Flood Support’ Facebook group.
