A message for constituents as we enter a new year

I want to take a moment as we step into the new year to pause and reflect, not just on the last year, but on the journey ahead.

Like many of us across Burnley, Padiham and Brierfield, I tuned into the King’s Christmas speech. I found it thoughtful, and quietly powerful. In particularly, it struck a chord when he talked of the idea that life is a shared journey, one that asks us to remember where we’ve come from while moving forward with hope. It feels particularly pertinent for towns like ours.

I’ve always been open about my respect for the King. Not linked to blind tradition, but because of the values he consistently upholds: public service, compassion, and respect for others.

In a world that feels increasingly fanatical and divided, that calm insistence on being decent matters. It sets a tone – one that reminds us that progress doesn’t come from having the loudest voice, but from pulling together.

Right here in Burnley, Padiham and Brierfield, we know something about shared journeys. This place is shared by hard graft and community spirit.

From the village market in the medieval era to the booming textile industry, we have a proud history of meeting enormous challenges and coming together. In wartime, through de-industrialisation, in moments when it would’ve been easier to give up, we did not.

That sense of resilience is still here. I see it every week in schools to workplaces, community groups to churches and charities – quiet acts of kindness that never make the headlines.

Looking towards 2026, I genuinely believe it will be a big year for our area. Not because everything will suddenly be easy – it won’t – but because optimism and spirit fill our town. There is talent here. There is ambition, there’s a growing confidence in what we can achieve when we focus on what unites, rather than divides us.

As the new year begins, my hope is simple – that we carry forward the values of respect, compassion, and shared purpose in everything that we do. If we as a town do that, I’m confident that the best days are ahead.

I wish you and your loved ones a peaceful, healthy, and hopeful new year.
