We have to be vigilant

After June's EU Referendum result, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, has announced she is about to repeal the 1972 European Communities Act which will formerly begin the process of leaving the EU,  followed by invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.

However, this will not happen until next March.

In the six months beforehand many threats prevail, not least from her own party with many “Remain” MPs and Lords threatening to vote against the wishes of 17.4 million voters in an attempt to kill off the referendum results by delaying it and ignoring democracy.

While the majority of grass-route Tory members voted “Brexit” over two-thirds of their MPs think that Britain should remain in the EU. They include Anna Soubry and Nicky Morgan with Baroness Altmann stating “I haven’t changed my view”, but while respecting what the voters have said, added we need to “steer the country in a responsible manner”.

There are also several legal challenges afoot to block us from leaving and let us not forget that PM Theresa May as Home Secretary allowed a record number immigrant into the country and campaigned to “Remain”.

We are a long way from what the majority voted for on June 23rd and UKIP’s job is far from over. Labour have become an ineffective opposition and like the Lib Dems want Britain to remain shackled to the EU.

For over 23 years, UKIP has been the only political party to have campaigned for Britain to leave the EU and we must ensure that “Brexit” happens and hold the government to account if any part of it is watered down and is not what the people voted for.
