War poem: Lest We Forget

They were only ordinary working men

Who put on uniforms to fight where and when;

They went to war to keep their families free

And proud of them forever we will be.

They went to war with stout hearts and good will

To defend England’s shores and its enemies to kill.

They went into battle with a feeling of great dread;

Some survived the fighting and others lay dead.

For the soldiers lying dying or dead in the mud,

The families that lost them carried on best they could.

These ordinary men, turned soldiers, are the best you will get

So let’s keep their memory alive and say “Lest we forget”
