Very lucky to have had Bishop John

I attended the final service at Blackburn Cathedral for the Bishop of Burnley who is now retiring. It was an excellent and very pleasant occasion.

I would just like to say how I feel he has done an excellent job over the last 15 years or so. I believe that in Bishop John we were very fortunate in 2001, at the time of the disturbances in Burnley, to have the right man as Bishop at the right time.

He was able to speak not just for the Church of England but the whole of the Christian Church with a calm, re-assuring voice.

He was able to speak to those of the Muslim faith in a confident and reassuring way and indeed to all of those of other faiths or of no faith.

His voice of common sense played a key role in helping the town overcome a major problem in a positive and forward-looking way.

His role at that time and in subsequent years should not be underestimated - I wish him well for a long and very happy retirement.
