Rabbit numbers hit fox population hard

With reference to Steven Smith’s letter, vave other readers noticed another possible reason which could have caused foxes to hunt for food in urban areas?

I have observed that the rabbit population of the local countryside has disappeared since the heavy snow and harsh weather of March 2013.

Before this there had been a steady increase in their numbers over many years.

Rabbits are a major source of food to the fox and as they cannot get their food from the supermarket shelves, they have find it in other places to survive.

As Mr Smith reminds us, humans are responsible for the extinction of many species. Perhaps we should reflect on this before we use the word “vermin”.
