LETTER: Water supply warning

I AM writing to ask folk to inform neighbours if they are going to have any work done that might affect their neighbours, especially when the water supply is going to be turned off!

This morning I woke up to discover I had no water supply, so could not wash my hands, have a cup of tea, glass of water, or do anything that needed water! It was NOT a good start to the day!

All my neighbours were out by then, and United Utilities knew nothing about it when I phoned. I was informed they would send someone to my house sometime today. That meant I had to stay in without any water supply!

At 2-30, I heard one of my taps running and realised the water was back on. Having phoned United Utilities to inform them, I decided to see if I could discover the source of the problem; a house a few doors away from me was having new water pipes laid behind that property; the workmen had been told, incorrectly, it was not a shared water supply.

With properties built in the 1930s or before (and maybe after, but before regulations changed) they are likely to be on a shared water supply circuit. If any of these properties are going to have their external water supply turned off while work is being done, it is vital the owners/occupiers inform United Utilities, and also inform neighbours the day before so arrangements can be made to fill containers in advance.
