LETTER: Time for councillors to become ‘volunteers’
Coun. Jeff Sumner questions the morality of community “volunteers” seeking wages.
Was there not a time when local councillors gave their time free to benefit their local community? So, instead of drawing two lots of allowances (Burnley Council, Lancashire County Council) I suggest Coun. Sumner takes the lead by “volunteering” his councillor services free.
His allowance monies could then go back into the local community kitty. What a great gesture, in view of “these current financial times” that would be from local politicians, particularly those drawing more than one set of allowances.
Do it for free and share public money more evenly around your local community.
