LETTER: ‘Olde worlde’ Colne needs a massive clean-up

Never having visited Colne town centre before, I was amazed at all the litter - especially cigarette ends - outside fast food outlets, taxi offices, pubs and betting shops, plus the vast amount of pigeon droppings on the pavements.

The worst areas for pigeon droppings were in the vacinity of the Town Hall and Blockbusters video. In the premises above the video shop, you can clearly see a window pane is missing from one of the rooms and pigeons are flying in and out and, I presume, breeding in there.

Also, I found there were lots of advertising boards blocking pavements and it was difficult to manoeuvre a wheelchair around them. This was also a problem for mothers with prams.

Some shops were inaccessible to wheelchair-users, which to me is totally unacceptable in this day and age, as there were steps at the entrance.

My verdict on Colne is that it is an “olde wordle” Lancashire town with friendly, helpful residents but requires a massive clean-up operation on the streets and properties plus a 21st Century “upgrade” with regard to access for the disabled.
