LETTER: Have you seen rare Hummingbird Hawkmoth?

HAS anyone in Clitheroe seen the Hummingbird Hawkmoth?

There was one in a garden up Catburn Park Drive.

This is a migrant visitor to the south of England from Europe in summer which is not common; a day flying species which hovers with an audible hum and feeds on nectar of red valerian and other flowers, using its long tongue. The lava feeds on bedstraw and is seldom seen in Britain.

It was hovering on geraniums the colour of valerian and wasn’t there long.

MRS GILES,

Chatburn Park Drive, Clitheroe
