LETTER: Gizza Job headline was too flippant

I AM sure I am not the only person who was offended by the Express front page headline on Friday, January 27th.

The headine “Gizza Job’” referred to a recruitment day held at the firm VEKA which was attended by over 1,000 people chasing just 100 jobs. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that most of the hopeful job seekers would have been disappointed.

Of course it is fantastic news that VEKA are doing well in spite of the recession and expanding their workforce and providing much needed jobs for the area. However, VEKA is a rare success story and unemployment in this area remains very high causing hardship and poverty for many. Families are struggling to make ends meet and young people who have worked hard to gain good qualifications are unable to find work. The local newspaper has a responsibility to report information in a mature and sensitive way and should not publish flippant headlines which trivialise the misery caused by the current economic situation.
