In South, Empire Theatre would be shining light

I was saddened to see the inside of the neglected and forgotten Empire Theatre in Cow Lane, Burnley, in the Burnley Express.

I wholly applaud television star Alice Barry in her endeavours to support anyone who will be willing to bring it back into use.

Like Alice, I visited the glorious theatre as a child and marvelled at the grandeur of it.

It is a crying shame that a Lottery bid in 1997, backed by Burnley Light Opera Society, to restore the theatre was unsuccessful.

What a different outcome if this theatre had been located in London. It would now be restored to its former glory and Londoners and residents from the South would be flocking to the theatre on the trains that were taken from us in this area.

The theatre would be hailed as a shining light.
