Green bin charge, who’s telling lies?

A few weeks ago you reported that Pendle Council was delighted with the number of people who had paid the additional £25 to have their green bin emptied.

.

Last week you published an article to the contrary, stating that it was deeply unpopular and was only taken up by 25% of those eligible. As 7,000 people have signed up for this charge, my maths says 21,000 have not.

I saw some time ago that the green bin was issued at a cost of £40 each, which means that there are £840,000 of green bins lying about in people’s gardens and back yards surplus to requirements and paid for by the ratepayers of Pendle. The council is now refusing to empty these, unless we pay the additional £25, even though this is a service covered by our general rates.

These 21,000 ornaments are taking up valuable space on our premises and should we decide to smash them up, remind me, is it the brown bin we put the pieces in? After all, we should all do our bit for recycling.
