Good reasons for new parking bays

In response to Mrs Prendergast’s letter (October 10th), we’re making Scotland Road much more accessible to shoppers.

Pendle Council and Lancashire County Council gave the green light to the plan to help the Scotland Road Traders Association which has been campaigning for this for some time. It won’t be open to through traffic so it won’t become a rat run, as Mrs Prendergast fears.

The 10 new parking bays will be limited to one hour. To maximise the benefits to both traders and shoppers and parking attendants will be vigilant.

Being closed at one end will make it safer for pedestrians and there’ll be plenty of space for people to shop, using the covered walkway.

Entrance to the new parking is from Russell Street and the road will be closed at the Nelson Shuttle end, but with a turning circle so that motorists can drive back out.

The Pendle Council project has been funded by Lancashire County Council and the Government’s High Street Innovation Fund.

All the shops are open during the changes which are almost complete.

Although it has been noisy, we’re confident it will be worth the effort, coupled with shopping local which is what will make town centre businesses thrive.
