Garden waste composted, not sent to landfill

In response to the letter from Neil Hodgson, I would like to correct what he said about Pendle’s garden waste being sent to landfill.

compost

Mr Hodgson is wrong to say this. In fact, garden waste we collect from homes across Pendle is taken to SITA’s waste transfer station in Nelson, very close to our Fleet Street depot. SITA then transfer the material to a site in Out Rawcliffe, Preston, where it is composted. The resulting compost is sent to the retail and landscaping market. None of Pendle’s garden waste is landfilled at all.

The only time when disposal would be considered is when contamination reached such a level that composting was not an option. Thankfully this hasn’t been the case so far in Pendle.
