Empty promises over Europe

Apparently, Ed Miliband delivered leaflets for Michael Foot in the 1980s, in favour of withdrawing from the European Union. Now he is Labour Leader he wants the UK to remain members of the EU, claiming (as do Lib-Dem and Conservative leaders) it is in our interest to stay in.

Now, even Unite, Labour’s biggest donor, has called for the party to support an in-out referendum on our membership “to give the British people a say”.

Strangely, withdrawal from the EU was in Labour’s 1993 manifesto and then the unions were against it due to pressure from the EU, stating that “old chestnut” millions of jobs would be lost.

Indeed, Danny Alexander was plying that myth again last week as a scaremongering tactic following UKIP’s success in the Euro Elections.

David Cameron promised one if he became Prime Minister only to renege, blaming the Lisbon Treaty. Now he’s promising one again providing he is re-elected.

So, nothing has changed, the empty promises from the political establishment keep going round. Why do people keep believing them?
