But, in Mr Pendle’s humble opinion, it was not only the closing ceremony that was OTT.

The same can be said of the BBC’s coverage of the Games.

Two weeks of saturation coverage of a sporting festival where British hopes of medals were few and far between – and yet several hours each day were given over to it with yet more besides if one includes what could be watched via the “red button”.

And the Beeb’s commentators and presenters - why were so many sent to Russia for an event of limited British interest – also went overboard in their description of some of the events.

Snowboarders performed unbelievable routines, skeleton, luge and bobsleigh racers risked life and limb to shave hundredths of seconds off their times and Team GB’s mens curling skip David Murdoch producing what was to some the shot of the century to secure victory in the last end of a game against Norway – until he did the same to win the semi-final against Sweden.

It was all a bit too much – it was in the schedules every morning when Mr Pendle had his breakfast and it was on each afternoon as he arrived home and began preparing his evening meal but, sadly, and day after day, the British medal tally refused to budge past the digits on one hand.
