Keep your comments coming

It is a column of my views on things which matter to me and, on the whole, I stick by every word I write.

It would be true to say that if I looked back at some of the things I wrote a decade or so ago, I would be a little perplexed.

But times change and so do opinions.

A lack of response from readers to anything I write can also cause me a little concern as it could seem to indicate that my views are a little more mainstream than I would like.

Last week I wrote about a change in rules which means that just about everyone who wants to watch BBC television programmes on any device, not just televisions, now has to have an appropriate licence.

I was at pains to point out that it wasn’t everyone, but just about everyone.

These columns are shared on our website and then out to an even wider audience via our social media channels.

And my column last week attracted much more reponse than I could have hoped for.

One response claimed the column must have been written by someone still in primary school. Clearly not.

Another pointed out that exemption was available to some people. I never said it wasn’t.

A third claimed that he had given up watching the BBC because it was too far left. A word of advice to this particular poster ... update your Facebook profile as your favourite television programmes currently include such BBC gems as Springwatch, Countryfile and Question Time.

And the most ridiculous was from someone who has clearly failed the basic swearing course as the 10-word tirade aimed at me used the same swear word three times. Not big, not clever.

But if I am allowed an opinion, so are you.

You may not agree with me, I may not agree with you.

But at the end of the day that is what having an opinion is all about.
