Crackpot idea to ban singing of ‘Delilah’

The match will see the traditional airing of Tom Jones’s 1968 hit “Delilah”, as is the case at Welsh home games – but former Plaid Cymru president Dafyyd Iwan, a politician unheard of before, has grabbed the headlines by trying to get the song banned because, he says, it glorifies domestic violence and trivialises murder.

No matter that the song has been sung at Welsh rugby internationals for years without so much as a murmur of complaint.

No matter that the song won the Ivor Novello Award in the year it was written for being the best song musically and lyrically, it reached number two in the charts and is always popular wherever karaoke sessions are held.

However, Mr Iwan, obviously short of a headline in the run-up to Christmas, called for the song not to be played and the national media went into hysterical overdrive.

Mr Pendle sincerely hopes the Welsh Rugby Football Union takes no notice of Mr Iwan.

Delilah was not the first song to be written about murder or violence when Barry Mason and Sylvan Whittingham penned it, there have been others since and there will be more in future.

Let’s allow Mr Iwan have his few minutes in the spotlight – and then let’s kick his crackpot proposal beyond the touchline and into the long grass where it belongs.
