2015 New Year’s Resolution to help charity

By the end of this week, Christmas Day will have passed us by for another year and we will start turning our thoughts to 2015.

Many of you will be thinking about New Year’s Resolutions to help make your own life better.

But what about a resolution to make life better for those you know or who share your community.

There is, of course, a myriad of ways in which you can do this.

Most of us can run, jump, swim, walk, cycle, knit, cook or sew with different levels of ability.

Some of us can grow beards and moustaches.

Others can have all their hair chopped off, although for fairly obvious reasons I don’t really fall into that category!

By now you might have guessed what I am getting at.

It is fairly simple really.

Make a New Year’s Resolution to take part in a sponsored event of some type.

It does not have to be a big event.

It does not have to raise a fortune.

But it can mak a huge difference to one of the hundreds of local charities or thousands of national ones.

I first took part in a sponsored event when I was about five years old and can confirm I have not taken part in a one-hour silence - sponsored or otherwise - in the almost 50 years since.

But I have dived into a swimming pool with an Olympic legend, walked miles, cycled further, run in many races, taken part in sponsored 72-hole golf marathons and sponsored pub crawls and taken part in other crazy things like cramming 20 people into a car or walking up Pendle Hill in various types of fancy dress.

I already have plans for at least three fund-raising efforts next year and will happily try find other sponsored events to take part in.

I never raise thousands of pounds.

But I know that is not what really matters as I have worked with enough local charities to know every single penny counts and much good work can be done with the money raised.

So spare a thought for those who need our help - and make a resolution to do something about it.
