Offenders ordered to pick up litter in Burnley grot spots

OFFENDERS in Burnley are helping to clear litter from the town after the council set up a partnership with the probation service.

Five days a week, a supervised team of people convicted of low-level offences will pick up rubbish in identified hot-spots.

At a meeting of Burnley Council, members of the Labour group voiced concerns council workers could be replaced by probationers but Coun. Neil Mottershead, Executive member for community safety, assured them that would not be the case.

“This scheme is not taking away jobs from the council employees and I think residents will agree with these people giving something back to the community,” he said.

Labour Coun. Shah Hussain added: “The Community Payback Scheme has been in operation for a number of years. I’m just surprised it’s taken the council this long to use it.”
