NHS workers stage strike in Burnley

“Enough is enough”: that was the message from Burnley General Hospital staff members as they joined hundreds of thousands of NHS workers across the country in a continued row with the government over pay.

Members from 11 unions formed picket lines outside the hospital from 7am after being refused a recommended 1% pay rise.

The strike action lasted four hours, and will be followed by six days of action short of strike action when workers will be working to rule.

Royal College of Midwives steward Allison Whitehead, who works in the Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre birth suite, said: “Midwives are at the end of their tether - they are going above and beyond every single day, and we don’t feel the pay is reflective. Midwives feel under-valued and demoralised with the pay, since we have not had a pay rise since 2010.”

Those on strike said that all essential services were being covered during the strike action, and that no patient was at risk.
