The old football changing rooms have been demolished and the Prairie Sports Village is really beginning to take shape with work having started on the main structure.

The new complex, on the Prairie at Windermere Avenue, will house an 18-bay golf range with full teaching facilities , a pro shop and reception area, and a development centre, meeting and multi-purpose rooms.

There are also plans for a sports bar and bistro with a lounge and relaxation area.

The first phase of the scheme was to install a floodlit 3G football pitch which was completed last October and is already well used.

A council spokesman said the Prairie project, which received £700,000 of funding from Football Foundation and Sport England, will be completed this summer.

The structural steelwork is in place and phase two is underway by the developers Barnfield Construction.

Both Burnley FC in the Community and Burnley FC Women and Girls are holding training evenings and development programmes at the venue, as part of a limited programme until the main village is completed.

Burnley Leisure facilities manager Neil Hutchinson said: “I am really excited about this project that is being developed by the council and will be managed by Burnley Leisure. This is set to be a hub for both adult and junior golf development in the borough while also providing multi-use facilities, which will be utilised for other leisure and junior activities, particularly during the school holidays.”
