New parents experience a different kind of delivery

Having just celebrated the arrival of their newborn, a Barley couple never anticipated they would become part of a very different delivery.

Johar Chowdhry and Sabeen Yousaf found themselves at the centre of a weather-related drama after being discharged from Burnley General Hospital with their two-day-old baby girl Kyra.

Snowy conditions meant the pair were unable to get to the safety of their remote farmhouse.

Having parked in Barley, the family were given a helping hand by Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team, who used a specialist 4x4 to drive the 15-minute journey to Higher Buttock Farm.

Now they have paid a massive thank you to the selfless volunteers, who went above and beyond to get them to safety.

Johar (24), who works in sales, said: “We rang mountain rescue at 2pm to put them on standby, and they were happy to help.

“It was quite bad [the weather] - it gets quite deep, and was four to five inches in places.

“We wouldn’t have been able to manage, and so we would like to thank them for their service, we appreciated what they did.

“I think they provide a really good service, which is generally overlooked. A lot of people don’t know what service they do provide, until they have to use them. Living where I do, I have seen them in action quite a lot.”

The arduous conditions provided a second hurdle for Sabeen (21), who had already had to undergo an emergency caesarean section. Kyra was born around two months early at a healthy 5lb. 12oz., and is now settling into her new home.

A RPMRT spokesman said: “If you ever wondered why we volunteer to help out the community in East Lancashire, then this call out should explain everything – not a mountain in sight, just helping our community.”
