Aimed at international students, specially those who lack opportunities in their own country, the new MBBS degree will teach medical sciences along with clinical and communication skills out of the university’s multi-million pound facilities in Preston and Burnley.

Students will also undertake clinical placements at some of the busiest hospitals in the North of England as part of their course.

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust and East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust are among those working with the university to provide placements.

Following a visit to UCLan School of Medicine, the General Medical Council has now officially committed to work with the university to enable the MBBS programme to acquire full GMC recognition.

Professor Cathy Jackson, head of the School of Medicine, said: “Our MBBS programme offers a more inclusive approach to typical medical education.

“The programme offers international students a state-of-the-art curriculum, exceptional practical clinical training, early patient contact and small class sizes, all delivered in the UK’s newest medical school.

“We have recruited a strong academic team well ahead of the launch, and thanks to the quality of the programme and our outstanding facilities, we are already receiving high calibre applications for 2016.”

Dr Damien Lynch, director of undergraduate education at ELHT, said: “The UCLan MBBS will attract the best global medical students to study and work in the NHS here in Lancashire.
