New chemo unit appeal tops £70,000

It was a tin collection by Rosemere Cancer Foundation volunteers and that was added to that raised by other collections at supermarkets in East Lancashire.

It has helped to boost the appeal’s total to just over £71,000.

This means the appeal, which launched last September, is now well on its way to reaching its £100,000 target to help with the building costs for a new, world class chemotherapy unit at Burnley General Hospital.

Plans for the state-of-the-art unit have been drawn up by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages Burnley General Hospital and which is also contributing £100,000 to its cost.

Once it’s complete this spring, the new chemotherapy unit will replace Burnley General Hospital’s smaller chemotherapy suite.

Around 4,000 chemotherapy treatments are delivered annually at Burnley General Hospital but this is increasing because of improving cancer care and an aging population.

The new unit has also been designed around patients’ needs, which according to medical research, can help improve patients’ response to treatment, bringing about better results.
