Mum overpaid £5,000 in benefits: court case

A mum-of-three got more than £5,000 she was not entitled to after keeping quiet about the fact she was living with her partner, a court heard.

Rhondda Lomas (31) did not tell either the Department for Work and Pensions or Pendle Borough Council she had a common household with David Greaves for seven months.

Burnley magistrates concluded her actions were more negligent than planned after being told the dishonesty netted an overpayment of £5,454.16 in income support and housing benefit.

Lomas, of Southfield Square, Nelson, admitted dishonestly falling to notify a change of circumstances. She had not previous convictions and was given a 12 month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 surcharge.
