A mum-of-two who broke into a man's Pendle home later claimed the innocent victim had sexually assaulted her when she was questioned by police, a court heard.

Kara-Jane McGill (40), who had been “sent to the wrong address,” turned the man’s life upside down by what she did. She was one of three people who raided the property, but was the only one detected as she left her fingerprints, Burnley Crown Court was told. McGill, of Clifton Drive, Blackpool, admitted burglary. The defendant, who has a record, but has not been in trouble since 1999 and is currently on a full-time course, was given eight months in jail, suspended for a year.

Prosecutor Mrs Emma Kehoe told the court police received a report that three people were breaking into the house in the afternoon. When officers arrived, it had already been broken into, and the three people had left. Mrs Kehoe said: “There was a fingerprint of the defendant at the point of entry, which identified her as one of the attackers of the premises. She’s arrested and she gives a convoluted story in interview. She says she went to that address and was subjected to a sexual assault by the victim. The interview was suspended and she then was treated as a victim.”

Mrs Kehoe said inquiries were made and thankfully the victim was never arrested. It transpired it was not him at all that was responsible for anything involving McGill or the others.

Judge Beverly Lunt said: “It wasn’t done maliciously by her. There’s no reason to believe she’s going to behave like this again at all.” She told McGill it didn’t matter what may have occurred, she was wrong to break in.
