Mike is ‘marathon man’ after life-changing op

“Life-changing” is the way a Whalley man describes an operation which saw him embark on a complete change of lifestyle.

After hip-replacement surgery, Mike Beckett (56) took up an intensive diet and exercise programme which saw him lose over four stones in weight.

After problems with Osteoarthritis stopped him playing football, Mike explained how he piled on the pounds: “My love of sport had always kept me fit and healthy, but Osteoarthritis in my left hip eventually stopped me playing football at the age of 43. My weight crept up gradually and my hip became unbearably painful in my early 50s. Walking was agony.”

The incentive to lose weight came in the form of a hip replacement operation in 2009. Mike continued: “I got full movement back, so it was much easier to change my sedentary lifestyle. In October, I completed my first 10k race and now have April’s London Marathon in my sights. I’ve completed a 21-mile run so I’m well on track with my training.”

Asthma UK is Mike’s charity of choice and he will hold a separate ‘school disco’ themed fund raising evening at Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday, April 13th.
