Friends and family of Michelle Holmes, who worked at Asda Burnley, and was a volunteer at the Middlesex Community Centre, gathered at the centre off Padiham Road to view the memorial garden.

Mum-of-one Michelle, who helped to organise the Christmas Toy Appeal in conjunction with the Burnley Express and Salvation Army, died suddenly aged just 46 after collapsing at work last October.

Coun. Neil Mottershead, who knew Michelle, said: “Michelle was a volunteer worker at Middlesex Avenue and worked tirelessly to try to improve the quality of life for the elderly who attended.

“The current Mayor, Jeff Sumner, and local councillors attended the unveiling of the garden as did her family, Asda colleagues and friends.

“A dedication speech was given and then refreshments served while people remembered Michelle.

“The garden has been planted and will be maintained by Michelle’s friends with help from local councillors. It will be an ongoing tribute to a remarkable lady.”

Mrs Holmes had worked at Asda for 12 years and in that time held various job titles but one of her main responsibilities was to allocate the supermarket’s charity cash to deserving causes in Burnley.

In the last 12 months before her death she had helped to distribute £50,000 to charities and community groups in the Burnley area.
