Memorial for Pendle’s Dr Malik who died after road accident

Dr Malik died in September after suffering a brain injury when he was involved in an accident with a car as he was crossing a road on foot.

He was going to his mosque for prayers when the tragedy happened.

When his funeral took place, several thousand people attended. He is buried in Nelson Cemetery.

Dr Malik was born in Pakistan but came to live in England and became a GP in Nelson along with his wife, Dr Mrs Raisa Malik.

They were in the role for more than 30 years, starting in Railway Street, then Leeds Road health centre and most recently at the Yarnspinners Health Centre.

Mrs Malik had retired but Dr Malik was still working when his accident happened. He ended up having two brain operations but sadly died in hospital.

On Saturday, his family – Dr Mrs Malik and children Dr Shahzad Malik, Dr Hammad Malik and Dr Shazia Malik – hosted the In Memoriam event at the People’s Centre in Brierfield.

As well as being a successful family doctor, Dr Malik was involved in many other roles, making major contributions to Pendle, the North-West and the whole of the country. He was honoured by the Queen for that.

It included Building Bridges Pendle, Pendle Pakistan Welfare Association (now People’s Empowerment and Enterprise Forum), British Medical Association, Lancashire Forum of Faiths, Community North West, Pendle Community Safety Partnership, Pendle Enterprise and many more.

Guests at the memorial were welcomed by his son Shahzad, then there were contributions from the team at Nelson Ghosia Mosque - Qari Syed Mohammed Yousaf, Syed Akhtar Husssain Shah and Kaji Mohammed Afzal.

Shahzad then gave the guests an entertaining history of his father’s life.

And then a whole series of people made speeches which honoured the contribution Dr Malik had made. They included Pendle Council leader Joe Cooney; the Mayor, Coun. Asjad Mahmood; chief executive Stephen Barnes; Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson; Liverpool MP Louise Ellman; a series of doctors and people who had worked with him in organisations, and friends. Dr Malik’s grandson Arman (10) also spoke greatly about him.

Son Hammad then read tributes sent in by other people including Lord Patel of Blackburn, the Pakistan Consul General of Manchester and Pendle business leader and Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire, Dennis Mendoros.

And daughter Shazia paid her personal tribute to her father and thanked the guest speakers before a meal was served.
