Mary scores a double first!

Mary is pictured with her Rotary presidential chain and the Deputy Mayor of Clitheroe’s chain. This was presented to the Borough Council by The Rotary Club of Clitheroe in 1958 to celebrate Rotary’s Golden Jubilee and the Clitheroe Club’s Silver Jubilee. The president in 1958 was Rotarian H.Elliott.

In other news from the Rotary Club of Clitheroe, former president (2015-16), Howard Blackburn, made his final charitable donations to local and national charities at West Bradford Village Hall. During his year as president, Howard has distributed around £21,000 to good causes on the club’s behalf, culminating in the distribution of the final £8,700 at the hand over lunch.

Life Education Centres, Ribble Valley Crossroads Care, The Christie Hospital, Royal Agricultural Benevolent Fund, Ribble Valley Food Bank, Blood Bikes, Dance Syndrome for Downs, Little Green Bus, EM Powered People, Bowland and Rossendale Mountain Rescue, Whalley Flood Fund and Rotary Polio Plus all received donations.

Howard thanked all club members and their helpers for all this year’s fundraising efforts.

And finally, the club is celebrating after winning the Lancashire and Cumbria District 1190 Quiz.

More than 50 teams of Rotarian’s, from Rotary Clubs in Lancashire and Cumbria, commenced the local heats of the District Quiz back in the winter months. This all came to a head with the final, being held at Garstang Golf Club, between The Rotary Clubs of Clitheroe and Garstang and Over Wyre.

‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ winner and team captain, Bill Honeywell lead his team of Mike Watkins, Barrie Lancaster and Jeff Robbins into a close fought final. After nine rounds of questions the scores were close at Clitheroe 70 and Garstang 66. In the final round Clitheroe managed to pull ahead, winning by 79 points to 71. The Clitheroe boys came away with the trophy and a cheque towards club funds, presented by district governor and Carnforth Rotarian, Arthur Jones. However, the sting in the tail is that Clitheroe have to organise next year’s District Quiz taking over from the excellent job done by the previous year’s winners Rossendale.
