Two men aged 19 and 20 have been arrested in connection with the disturbances but detectives are still investigating.

One resident in the tight-knit community said trouble had been brewing all day with gangs of youths roaming the streets drinking.

Reports say a pregnant 23-year-old mother-of-two was attacked outside a cornershop in Reservoir Street earlier on Saturday.

That evening, an eye witness described how violence erupted outside her property. “It was a nightmare. I was really scared. I saw people punching and kicking each other. There was about 25 or 30 of them. Then I saw one man fall to the ground,” she said.

“They are not from round here. They come up to this area causing trouble. It is not right.”

A Burnley CID spokesman confirmed officers were called to deal with a disturbance involving a “large” number of people on Saturday night.
