Man in violent attack on wife

Wasim Hussain was said to have thrown Saiqa Akhtar to the floor, dragged her across the room, punched her in the head and smacked her with a child’s toy. The youngsters were upset and crying, Pennine magistrates were told.

The hearing was told Mrs Akhtar, who would say her husband of eight years had been violent towards her before, was left extremely scared and called police. She had three large lumps on her head, her face was sore and red and she had carpet burns as well as losing a lot of her hair.

The defendant (29), of Hibson Road, Nelson, had admitted assault causing actual bodily harm. He was given an 18-month community order, with 18 months supervision and 225 hours unpaid work.

Mr Andrew Robinson (prosecuting) said the victim would say Hussain had been violent towards her throughout the marriage. He had also been abusive, but she had been too scared to tell the police before.

She now felt her husband, who had been away from the children since the assault, had learned his lesson and she did not want him to go to prison and be away from the youngsters any longer. She wanted to move forward and for the family not to have to go though it again.

Mr Richard Taylor, for Hussain, said he and his wife had rowed. He would say he had wanted to sort it out and had taken hold of her shoulders and wrist to try and keep her still. She did not want to talk, struggled free and made contact with the floor. The children had not been present.

The defendant accepted she was injured and was sorry and remorseful. He was hard-working and had been kept away from the family for six months by bail conditions. Hussain was embarrassed and ashamed to be in court.
