M65 horror crash latest: Police appeal

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after two men from Burnley died in a horror smash on the M65 in the early hours of this morning.

The collision took place around 2-15am when a blue Peugeot 106, silver Renault Clio and a black Citroen C2 were all travelling towards Burnley, between junctions 9 and 10 of the M65.

Both occupants of the blue Peugeot 106, aged in their late 40s, died at the scene. Their families are being supported by specially trained officers.

The driver of the silver Renault Clio was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the black Citroen C2 was uninjured.

Police motorway patrols attended the scene and an investigation is under way.

Senior investigating officer Sgt John Jennings-Wharton from East Road Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic incident in which two men have lost their lives. I am keen to speak with anybody that witnessed the collision itself or thinks they saw any of the three vehicles travelling along the M65 in the early hours of this morning to come forward and speak with us.

“The scene of the collision is extensive with two of the vehicles on their roof. “
