The stark warning from police comes as a driver was flagged down by a motorist who claimed to have run out of petrol, before asking for a loan. They then asked to leave a guarantee as security.

Police said the scam follows the pattern of similar incidents in other parts of the country where conmen claim to have run out of petrol before asking other drivers for loans, offering to leave jewellery and other items as security.

Police have also warned of people offering jewellery for sale near to the motorway and on slip roads.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: “Anyone offering jewellery for sale either on the slip road or near to the motorway network is trying to con you.”
