John and his wife Judith served as Mayor and Mayoress of the borough more than 20 years ago.

Fellow Liberal councillor Lord Tony Greaves said: “John really wanted to complete his term of office to May next year, and was recovering well from his illness earlier this year.

“But he had a serious relapse around Easter and has been quite poorly since then. He is still hoping to come through it, but will need a great deal of treatment in the next few months and has reluctantly decided that he cannot do justice to the job of councillor.”

Coun. Greaves added: “John’s contribution to public life in Pendle has been huge, not least to serving his fellow residents in Fence and Wheatley Lane, and in previous years in Higham as well.

“I hope that the council will be able to pay some kind of recognition to his service, but in the meantime we just wish him well for a recovery from his illness, and send both John and Judith our very best wishes for the future.”
