The figures mean Lancashire County Council has once again generated the biggest sign-up rates for any local authority in the north west.

Stoptober is run nationally by Public Health England and supported locally by Lancashire County Council. Its aim was to encourage people to give up smoking for good during the month of October.

Lancashire’s success follows improvements to the way stop smoking services are planned and managed across the county.

County Coun. Azhar Ali, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “I’m pleased that Lancashire is once again leading the way in the north west for the number of people who have signed up for Stoptober.

“More than 20% of the county’s population smokes; that’s higher than the national average. It’s one of the main reasons why people who live in poorer areas of our county suffer worse health than those in more affluent areas.

“Research shows that you’re four times more likely to stop with support from health experts and because we’ve directed people to our stop smoking service, we think that many of the people who signed up will quit for good.”
