Jailed: 21-year-old flouted curfew and work orders

Burnley magistrates heard how Jake Marren (21) had flouted a curfew and unpaid work. He had been living with his dad, but had been thrown out after bailiffs chasing Marren for unpaid fines kept threatening to take his father’s property.

The hearing was told Marren was given a 12-month community order, with a 12-week curfew, and 200 hours’ unpaid work last July, after he was convicted of common assault.

He later appeared before the justices for breaching it and in September the order was revoked and a new order made with 200 hours’ unpaid work. He appeared again for breach last November and 20 extra hours of work were added.

He admitted failing to comply with the order and has now been jailed, after ignoring community penalties for a third time.

The court heard Marren, of Briercliffe Road, Burnley, had completed 17 hours and 15 minutes of the 220 hours of work and attended four out of 23 appointments.

Mr Mark Williams (defending) said he had lost his job and his accommodation and was being chased by bailiffs over a lot of unpaid fines.

The solicitor added: “His whole life has fallen apart significantly. He was living with his dad, but the bailiffs came to his father’s address and were going to take his father’s property. His dad threw him out.”

Bench chairman Mr John James told the defendant: “You have wilfully and persistently breached several court orders.”
