Two super slimmers from Burnley have been awarded the title of Diamond Member of the Year for setting a sparkling example of long-term weight loss.

Susanne Green and Julie Cowgill both joined the 1882 Lounge Burnley Football Club Slimming World group in January 2016.

Susanne lost five-and-a-half-stone in 10 months and Julie lost five stone in 12 months.

And more impressively, they've kept the weight off ever since.

Now Susanne (57), who dropped from seventeen-and-a-half-stone to 12 stone and 49-year-old Julie dropped from 15 stone to 10 stone, have been named the Diamond Members, 2018.

The title is awarded to the group’s most inspirational member who has lost weight and maintained their new shape – an accomplishment that Slimming World believes is the most under-recognised achievement in weight management – as voted for by the slimmers in the group.

Susanne decided to join Slimming World after seeing herself in photographs that had been taken at a wedding and she was horrified.

Julie decided to join because she wanted to improve her health. Her father had sadly passed away from a heart attack and she had started to suffer palpitations and was sent to a cardiologist.

Susanne dropped from dress size 18/20 to size 12/14 and Julie from size 18/20 to size 12/10.

Like many people they had both tried countless diets to lose weight but nothing seemed to work and they just ended up feeling irritable and hungry.

Susanne and Julie followed Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmers to fill up on healthy, satisfying foods like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish so they lose weight without going hungry or feeling deprived.

Susanne said: "I’m really adventurous in the kitchen now and I’ve passed lots of healthy habits on to my family and friends too."

As the weight came off Julie decided to try increasing her activity levels and she began slowly by going for small walks until being active was part of her routine. Now she challenges herself to longer walks, including going up Pendle Hill and she has a 5k in her sights now.

The duo credit class leader Caroline Griffiths and fellow class members for their encouragement and support in helping them to reach their goals.

Their win now puts them in the running for the national title of Slimming World Diamond Member 2018 where the overall winner, chosen from one of Slimming World’s 18,000 groups across the UK and Ireland, will take home £2,000 and be announced in the coming months.
