Ben King (27) died on Sunday surrounded by his family.

When he was first diagnosed with the tumour in September 2014, Ben immediately set up the fund BK’s Heroes which has so far raised £12,000 to increase awareness of brain and kidney disease.

The former Nelson and Colne College catering student, who worked as a chef at the Sparrowhawk in Fence and the ACE Centre in Nelson, said he set up the fund “to help others and give something back for the incredible medical treatment he had received”.

Writing on Facebook, his mum Fiona said: “This is the hardest post I have ever had to write.

“At 2pm today our beautiful boy Ben passed away.

“Myself, Dave and Dan were with him and cuddled him until he went to sleep. Xxx.”

The post has seen tributes pour in. Lindsey Nottingham posted: “The amount of posts here says it all. You had one very special son there Fiona. I’m so, so very sorry. No words will ease your heartbreak right now but know that so many people are thinking about you all and are here to help when needed x.”

Ian Thompson wrote: “A brave young man, a hero, an inspiration. May you remember the good times and the laughter he gave you in these coming days. Our thoughts are with your family at this very sad time.”

Sherif Dhaimish wrote: “Rest in peace, Ben. The world has lost a true gentleman. Sincere condolences to his family and close ones. X.”
