Hospice Light Up A Life raises £110,000

The annual Pendleside Hospice Light up a Life appeal raised the record amount of £110,083 and saw almost 8,100 people remembered by their loved ones dedicating a light to their memory.

All the lights were displayed around the outside of the hospice building and a Christmas tree outside the main hospice reception.

The lights were lit at a moving service in December and stayed lit throughout Christmas and New Year.

Around 950 people attended the service, which was held in the hospice grounds and featured performances from Grace O’Malley and Basics Junior Theatre Group, as well as seasonal readings and carols. As the natural light faded, the lights were lit by Mayor of Burnley Coun. Andy Tatchell.

Hospice fund-raising manager Mrs Kaye Bartle said: “It’s heart warming to see people honouring the memories they have of their loved ones in this way.

“Christmas time is a time for getting together with family and loved ones and if that special person who lit up your life is no longer around it can be particularly painful.

“Light up a Life gives an opportunity to remember loved ones in a positive way and although many people find the switch on service very emotional they often tell us how much they enjoyed being able to join together with others at this special time of year.”

Light up a Life is sponsored by local, family-run company Alderson and Horan Funeral Service, who also provide the Christmas tree for outside the main hospice reception and a leather-bound Book of Remembrance containing the names of everyone remembered.

The money raised from Light up a Life helps the hospice continue its care to local people given the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness.
