Although new to the role, Helen, who is a registered nurse, has been with the hospice since April, 2004 when she was appointed as day therapy leader after previously working as a manager for a national care home charity.

Not long after joining the hospice, she was appointed to the role of clinical services manager, with responsibility for clinical care delivery and service development.

While in that role, she undertook a master’s degree in hospice leadership run in partnership with Lancaster University and Hospice UK, from which she graduated in December, 2013, the purpose of the programme being to prepare hospice leaders for dealing with the many challenges that hospices are currently facing and are likely to face in the future.

Having worked at Pendleside Hospice for almost 11 years, Helen is very proud of the care that the hospice team provides and the difference the hospice can make to people with life limiting illnesses, their families and carers.

Hence, when the previous chief executive, Mr Brian Hartup, decided to retire in December, 2014, after almost 14 years of service, Helen decided that she wanted to build on the experience that she had gained over the years working at Pendleside and to step up to the challenge of leading the hospice into the future.

She said: “I am delighted and honoured to be taking on this new role, leading Pendleside Hospice into the next stage of its development and I’m determined to ensure it continues to provide outstanding care to those that need it.
