Today, temperatures are expected to turn milder as the day progresses and the mercury could reach 10°C by early evening as gusty winds replace the icy blast temporarily, bringing rain with it.

But forecasters are predicting a return to a colder spell in the second half of the week.

On Wednesday, the winds are predicted to strengthen further, with thunder and hail showers and snow on higher ground and a maximum of 5°C.

The chill continues on Thursday, which is forecast to remain wintry and windy, with Friday expected to be clearer, both with maximum of 5°C. Snow is forecast for Saturday as the mercury drops further still.
