Former barber '˜Ted' dies after lifetime's work

Mr George Hugill, known as Ted, was a familiar face in town due to his Maison Hugill barber’s salon in Keirby Walk.

The business had been started by his father Joseph in 1918 at 4 Croft Street, the site of the current Burnley Bus Station.

Mr Hugill, who started working as a “lather boy”, preparing customers for a shave, in his father’s shop, had worked all his life in the trade until his retirement aged 70.

His daughter Catherine Crowther, who still works at the salon in Keirby Walk, said: “I think most people would described my dad as a proper English gentleman.

“He was a wonderful man.

“He started working for my grandfather when he was around 14.

The business moved from Croft Street to Yorkshire Street and then to Keirby Walk in the 1940s.”

Mr Hugill, who lived in Kibble Bank with his wife Hannah, also leaves son Peter, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The couple celebrated 55 years of marriage together in February.

Catherine added: “Dad lived and worked so he could enjoy family holidays.

“Together with mum, they enjoyed coach tours of Italy and Germany, and also visited Australia.”

Mr Hugill’s funeral took place earlier this month.
