Footballer hanging tragedy

a NELSON Football Club player who was found hanged at his home on Christmas Eve has been described as “one of the nice guys who nobody had a bad word for”.

The body of Jason Powrie, who was a left-sided forward with the Victoria Park club, was found at his home in Penwortham at 1-45 p.m.

Paramedics were called to attend, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances into the death of the 20-year-old father-of-one.

Nelson’s game with Holker Old Boys in the North-West Counties League First Division on Boxing Day was called off as a mark of respect.

Manager Paul Paynter described the news as a “great shock”. He said: “Paul was very raw but had a good physique and was ready to learn. He had so much potential.

“He had a happy-go-lucky attitude and never seemed to be down-hearted.

“He did not let anything get him down and always seemed a nice, friendly type of lad who nobody had a bad word to say about.”

A Facebook page to commemorate his life set up by his two older sisters had received more than 360 entries on Wednesday.

One sister, Kerry Louise, said: “I can write this and smile because I know you are at peace, sleeping, and playing with the angels.

“There will be lots to think about for me, so many questions I will try and work out the answers for. I’m so proud of you for being so brave. I know things had been so hard recently and your little body and mind just could not take it any more.

“I tried so hard to help you and guide you through things and I just hope those angels have taken over and guide you to the place you are happy to be. You will always be in my heart, I will think about you every day.

“I love you Jason, I love you more than words can describe.”

His other sister, Rebecca, said: “I love you more then you will ever know. You’re my baby brother and that will never change! God rest your soul, words can’t explain the pain I feel, but I know you’re safe and at peace now. Lots and lots of love.”

A works colleague of Jason’s at Next in Preston, sales consultant Abbey Payne, said: “Can’t believe you won’t be there to brighten our working days any more.

“You always gave me hope for better things and you were there if I needed someone. Loved working with you, it won’t be the same. Rest in peace.”

The facts surrounding Jason’s death have been reported to the coroner.
