Firefighters were called out to the St George's Mill in Canal Street off Queen's Lancashire Way at 2-43am and four crews from Burnley, Padiham and Nelson tackled the blaze with the help of an aerial ladder platform team from Hyndburn.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Firefighters jetted water onto the fire from the height of the extended ladder and from additional jets, pitching ladders for access.

The fire service said that by daybreak, the scale of the fire had been reduced to isolated pockets to be damped down and resources needed to bring the incident to a close had been reduced accordingly.

Police were also called out at 2-55am to assist with road closures which were in place during the early hours of this morning but these are no longer in place.
