Clarke (35) was hit by a lorry on the A64 in Bishopthorpe, North Yorkshire, on December 22nd, and is currently recovering in hospital in Leeds.

His wife Gemma took to Twitter this week to say: “Thank you again for asking after Clarke. He’s still in hospital but is getting better and stronger each day.”

The football community has rallied round in support of the popular Preston-born player who suffered serious head and knee injuries in the collision.

Following the accident, it was revealed the former chairman of the Professional Footballers’ Association had been accused of failing to provide a sample on December 20th in London and was due to appear in court next week.

Clarke, once dubbed “Britain’s Brainiest Footballer” after winning television quiz show “Countdown” and a representative for mental health charities, made 149 appearances for the Clarets between 2007 and 2012.
