Ex Burnley teacher Roger dies aged 62

Born and brought up in Burnley, Roger Green was a familiar figure in Scouting and sporting fields. He had been the Scoutmaster at St John’s. Worsthorne, for the last 20 years and was a keen long-distance swimmer and hill walker. He taught at Rosegrove Swimming Club and regularly took part in the charity BT Swimathon.

Mr Green had enjoyed being in the Scouts as a teenager and stepped in to take over the Scoutmaster’s role in Worsthorne when his sons Andrew, Christopher and Matthew were youngsters.

He studied at Manchester University and worked in research and development at Hepworth Palver, Hapton, for more than 20 years before becoming a science teacher at Ivy Bank, and, in more recent years, had been a driving school instructor.

Mr Green and his wife, Anne, were married for nearly 40 years and enjoyed ballroom dancing and hill walking together. The couple have three grandchildren.

Always very fit, he swam 80 lengths four times a week at the St Peter’s Centre, Burnley, until becoming ill in August.

He was cared for at the Royal Blackburn Hospital and then at Blackpool Victoria, where he died on Easter Monday.

Mr Green’s funeral took place on Saturday with a service at St John’s, Worsthorne, and cremation at Burnley.
